HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage of workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs.

HIPAA requires employers to give credit for coverage under a prior health plan as long as there is no break in coverage (63 days or longer). HIPAA also requires employers to provide certification of coverage in three circumstances: termination of coverage, termination of COBRA coverage, or as requested by the employee within 24 months of termination coverage.
